The AI Tax: How B2B SaaS Really Prices Its AI Features

Bottom line up front: How should I budget for AI features when every vendor charges differently?

Budget by pricing model, not by vendor: of 19 AI features we catalogued, only 4 are bundled free, while 6 are metered, 4 are flat add-ons and 2 need a sales call.

Metered is the hard one. Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome, and Zendesk charges $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go once the included allowance runs out. With a per-outcome price, the definition of the unit matters as much as the rate, so get in writing what counts as a billable resolution and whether a customer who comes back later is charged twice. Then run last quarter's real ticket volume through that rule, spike weeks included, and set a spending cap or alert before launch, because a product launch or an outage can multiply support contacts overnight. Treat the table as a snapshot, since HubSpot's Breeze and Slack's AI add-on both changed within the last 12 months.

“AI included” means at least four different things depending on who’s selling it: free and bundled into a plan you already pay for, a flat add-on fee stacked on top, a metered/credit system that scales with usage (and is genuinely hard to estimate in advance), or a custom-quote hybrid you can’t price at all without a sales call. Of the 19 AI features we catalogued, only 4 are truly free-bundled with no extra cost. 6 are metered or credit-based, the least predictable model, since your bill moves with usage. 4 are flat-fee add-ons. 2 are locked behind custom quotes.

Key findings

  • Of 19 AI features across 14 B2B software comparisons, only 4 are bundled free with no extra cost.
  • 6 are metered or credit-based, the least predictable model because the bill moves with usage.
  • 4 are flat-fee add-ons, and 2 cannot be priced at all without a sales call.
  • Video conferencing is the only category where every vendor we track (Zoom, Google Meet, Webex) bundles its AI assistant free.

Classification reflects each vendor’s publicly published pricing as of September 2026. AI pricing is changing faster than almost anything else in this market; several of these models shifted within the last 12 months (HubSpot’s Breeze moved from flat inclusion to credit-based; Slack discontinued a paid AI add-on entirely). Check the linked comparison for the most current detail.

What stands out

Video conferencing is the one category where AI is unambiguously free right now: Zoom, Google Meet, and Webex all bundle their AI assistant into paid plans with no metering. Everywhere else, the picture is messier. Customer support tools price AI per-resolution (Intercom’s $0.99/resolution is at least transparent about it; Zendesk bundles the same idea into a murkier tiered allowance). Project management is split three ways in a single category: Monday bundles capped credits, ClickUp charges a separate flat fee, and Asana meters by credit. That is three different tools solving the same problem with three different pricing philosophies. And at the high end, Outreach and Salesloft won’t tell you what their AI agents cost at all until you’re on a sales call, which is itself a signal worth noting.

The practical takeaway

If a vendor’s AI feature is metered or credit-based, ask for your expected monthly usage translated into a worst-case dollar figure before you sign, not just the per-unit rate. A $0.99-per-resolution model sounds cheap until support volume triples during a product launch. Bundled-free AI (Zoom, Google Meet, Webex, Slack) is the only category here where the sticker price is the real price.

Methodology & caveats

We searched the full text of our own comparison pages for every mention of “AI” and manually classified each distinct AI feature into one of five pricing models based on the vendor’s own published pricing page. Vendors that disclose only “contact sales” for their AI tier are marked hybrid/custom-quote. This is a snapshot, not a permanent ranking; AI pricing in B2B SaaS is moving faster than any other part of these vendors’ price sheets, and several models here will likely change within the year.
