Bottom line up front: Where do I start if I'm not sure which kind of software I need?

Start from the job you need done, then open that category: each page puts every tool we track side by side with verified pricing, free-plan limits and how AI is billed.

Before adding a category, check what you already own. HubSpot sits under both CRM and marketing automation, Microsoft Teams covers team chat and video conferencing, and Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 are listed as office suites, so a tool you pay for may already do a second job. Every new tool costs more than its price, because it's another login to off-board, another integration to keep working and another renewal date to track. My rule is that a new tool has to do its job clearly better than what you have, not just differently. If it passes, shortlist two or three in the category and read their head-to-head next.

About the author

Bill Belcamino

Founder and author, HelpCompare

Engineer by training, operator by experience, marketer by choice. Bill spent eight and a half years as an engineer at HP, was COO of Auctiva (the number one third-party selling platform on eBay, past 200,000 users) and ran Google’s $70M/year search syndication partnership at Alot.com. Then he spent 13 years building his own web properties with his own money at stake. He has bought, trialled, integrated and cancelled more SaaS tools than he can count, and started HelpCompare because the real cost of switching tools is the part nobody covers.

“I’ve sat on both sides of the table: the agency recommending the tool and the client paying for it.”
