AI ASSISTANTS · MIGRATION GUIDE

Switching from Gemini to ChatGPT

Adding ChatGPT does not mean leaving Google Workspace: most teams keep Workspace and add ChatGPT Business seats for the people who need more. Nothing imports, so Gems are rebuilt as custom GPTs.

Heads up: AI assistants change their plans, prices, models and usage limits almost daily. Everything on this page is accurate as of September 19, 2026, the date we checked each vendor’s pricing page and documentation. Confirm current terms on the vendor’s own site before you buy.

Quick verdict: Keep Google Workspace for email and documents, and add ChatGPT Business seats ($20 a month each on annual billing) for the people who need image generation, custom GPTs, Codex or Premium usage. Export Gemini chats and Gems with Google Takeout as an archive, rebuild each Gem as a custom GPT, and connect ChatGPT to Google Workspace so it can reach your files. OpenAI documents no import from other assistants.

Why teams move from Gemini to ChatGPT

    Beyond the Workspace apps

ChatGPT adds image generation, voice, deep research, custom GPTs and Codex in every seat.

    Works across tools

ChatGPT connects to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack and GitHub.

    Premium seats for heavy users

Premium seats get 5x Standard usage with no 5-hour limit.

    How the migration actually works

You rarely replace Gemini outright, because it comes with Workspace. Decide who needs ChatGPT seats and buy only those.

    StepWhat you do
1Export what you can from GeminiUsers export Gemini chats with Google Takeout (select My Activity, then Gemini Apps) and Gems (select Gemini). On Business Plus and above, admins can retain and export Gemini conversations with Google Vault.
2Decide who needs a ChatGPT seatGemini stays available to everyone on Workspace. Buy ChatGPT Business seats (minimum 2, up to 200) only for people who need what it adds.
3Set up ChatGPT BusinessConfigure SAML single sign-on with your identity provider and invite users.
4Connect Google WorkspaceEnable ChatGPT’s Google Workspace connector so it can search and read your Drive files and email.
5Rebuild Gems as custom GPTsRecreate each Gem’s instructions and reference files as a custom GPT and share it with the workspace.
6Set usage expectationsStandard seats include limits in 5-hour windows; move heavy users to Premium seats if they hit them.

What this path doesn’t do for you:

Nothing imports: OpenAI documents no import of chats or memories from other assistants. Gemini features inside Gmail, Docs and Meet have no ChatGPT equivalent inside those apps, which is why most teams keep both. ChatGPT Business is paid by card, without invoicing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to leave Google Workspace to use ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT Business works alongside Workspace and connects to it; Gemini stays included in your Workspace plan.

Can ChatGPT import Gems or Gemini chats?

No. OpenAI documents no import from other assistants. Export Gems and chats with Google Takeout and rebuild Gems as custom GPTs.

How much will ChatGPT add to the bill?

$20 per Standard seat a month on annual billing ($25 monthly), or $100 per Premium seat, with a two-seat minimum.

How do I export Gemini chats?

With Google Takeout: select My Activity, then Gemini Apps, for chats, and Gemini for Gems. Admins on Business Plus and above can also export with Vault.

Will my old chats be searchable in the new assistant?
