Claude vs Gemini for Teams: Which AI Assistant Fits Your Business in 2026?

Claude Team is a dedicated $20 seat that works alongside any office suite. Gemini for teams is not a separate purchase: it comes bundled inside Google Workspace, from $7 a user a month. Here is what each actually buys you.

Bottom line up front: Does a Google Workspace company still need Claude Team?

Not for drafting inside Docs and Gmail, since Gemini comes with Workspace, but Claude Team at $20/seat/mo earns its place if your people write code or work through long documents.

Check your Workspace tier first: Business Starter at $7 gets Gemini in Gmail with a 32K-token context, and the full Docs, Sheets and Meet version starts at Business Standard ($14). Claude Team has a 2-seat minimum and includes Claude Code in every seat. My rule for any AI seat is to buy for the people who'll use it, not the whole headcount, because AI licenses are easy to overbuy and hard to spot sitting idle. Give a handful of heavy users Claude for a month, look at what they actually produced with it, and keep Gemini as the default for everyone else, confirming prices first since AI plans change often.

Is Claude cheaper than Gemini?

For a Google Workspace customer, Gemini adds nothing extra to the bill — it is bundled into Business Starter ($7), Standard ($14) and Plus ($22), all billed annually per user. Claude Team costs $20/seat/mo on annual billing ($25 monthly, 2-seat minimum) on top of whatever office suite you already pay for. If you are not on Workspace, the fairer comparison is Claude’s $20 against Workspace Business Standard’s $14, which also includes business email, video meetings and 2TB of pooled storage per user — not just AI.

Editorial assessment

How they actually differ

These are two different kinds of purchase. Claude Team is a dedicated AI seat that works alongside whatever tools you already use. Gemini for teams is a feature of Google Workspace: how much of it you get depends on your Workspace plan, and you cannot buy the office-embedded version without Workspace (Google also sells a separate “Gemini Enterprise” agentic-AI product outside Workspace, with its own, less-published pricing).

How much Gemini each Workspace plan includes

Business Starter gets Gemini in Gmail and basic access to the Gemini app, with a 32K-token context. Business Standard and Plus add Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet and Drive, Google’s Pro model with a 1M-token context, and Gems (reusable custom assistants). The jump from Starter to Standard is where Gemini actually becomes an office-wide assistant rather than an email helper.

Where Claude leads

Claude Code ships in every paid Claude seat at no extra charge, sharing the plan’s usage limits — a real advantage for teams doing technical work. Claude also supports up to a 1M-token context on some models, letting it work across long documents or large codebases in a single conversation. Gemini’s Jules coding agent is not currently offered on Workspace business accounts, only personal plans.

Data controls and memory

Workspace admins can switch off Gemini conversation history, auto-delete it on a schedule, and (on Business Plus) retain and export it via Vault. Anthropic states Claude does not train on Team/Enterprise conversation data by default. Neither vendor’s consumer-style memory or chat-history import features extend to business/Workspace accounts.

Claude

Pros

  • Claude Code included in every paid seat
  • Up to a 1M-token context on some models
  • Works with any office suite, not just Google
  • Predictable per-seat pricing, no bundled tiers to parse

Cons

  • A second subscription on top of whatever office suite you use
  • 2-seat minimum on Team
  • No office apps of its own — nothing embedded in Docs/Sheets equivalents
  • No published free-plan business tier beyond individual Free

Gemini

Pros

  • Included in Google Workspace at no extra cost
  • Built into Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet and Drive
  • Admin auto-delete and Vault retention controls
  • 14-day Workspace trial

Cons

  • Starter gets only basic Gemini access and a 32K context
  • No Jules coding agent on Workspace accounts
  • Full office-app AI requires upgrading to Standard or Plus
  • Cannot buy the Workspace-embedded version without Workspace itself

What this means for your team

  • Audit reports: Claude states a SOC 2 report on its own site; we found no SOC 2 statement for Gemini. If your security team requires SOC 2, ask Gemini directly before shortlisting.
  • Single sign-on: Claude includes it on Team; Gemini includes it on Business Starter. If your team signs in through Okta, Microsoft Entra ID or Google, price the Claude plan that includes SSO, not its entry plan; Gemini includes it on the entry plan.
  • Health data: Claude and Gemini will sign a HIPAA business associate agreement (Claude: Enterprise).
  • Working offline: Claude and Gemini need an internet connection. Details are in the Offline mode row above.
  • Office-only access: Claude can restrict sign-ins to approved IP ranges on Enterprise; Gemini can restrict sign-ins to approved IP ranges on Enterprise. That suits an office network or a company VPN; fully remote teams need a VPN for it to work.
  • Where your data lives: Gemini lets you choose US, EU on Business Standard. This matters for teams hiring across the EU, UK or Australia.

Claude: worth knowing

  • RemoteOn Enterprise, admins can restrict access to approved CIDR ranges such as office locations and VPN exit points; requests from other IPs are blocked. source
  • SecurityCustomer data is stored in the US; by default traffic may be routed to select countries in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. source
  • OfflineCowork runs tasks in an isolated virtual machine on the user's computer and can read and write only folders the user connects. source
  • RemoteTeam usage limits are per member, so one person hitting a limit does not affect colleagues. source

Gemini: worth knowing

  • SecurityGemini app chats and uploads from users with a Workspace license are not human-reviewed or used to train models; users signed in with personal Google accounts do not get this protection. source
  • RemoteAdmins can retain, hold, search and export Gemini app conversations with Google Vault regardless of user deletion settings. source
  • SecurityGemini Notebook data is stored as separate copies and is not covered by the organization's data region settings. source
  • RemoteThe Gemini desktop app for Mac requires macOS Sequoia 15 or later on Apple Silicon. source
