Claude cannot import your ChatGPT chat history, but it can import memory, and custom GPTs map neatly onto Claude projects. The move is mostly about rebuilding reusable context, not data.
Heads up: AI assistants change their plans, prices, models and usage limits almost daily. Everything on this page is accurate as of September 19, 2026, the date we checked each vendor’s pricing page and documentation. Confirm current terms on the vendor’s own site before you buy.
Quick verdict: Export what you can from ChatGPT as an archive, then rebuild the parts your team reuses: each custom GPT becomes a Claude project with the same instructions and knowledge files, shared with the right people. Claude’s experimental memory import (on Free, Pro, Max and Team) can carry over what ChatGPT remembers about each user. Seat prices are identical, $20 per Standard seat on annual billing, so the cost of the move is time, not licences. Note that Claude Team tops out at 150 seats and does not generate images.
Most buyers only budget for the new subscription. This estimates the hidden labor, data-cleanup, and retraining cost of actually making the switch.
Estimate assumes: 1 hour of data-mapping/cleaning labor per 2,000 records, a blended $75/hr ops rate, tiered migration & cleaning tooling fees, and 4 hours of retraining per seat at a $45/hr fully-loaded rate.
Every paid Claude plan includes Claude Code, sharing the same usage pool as chat.
Claude Team projects can be shared with view or edit permissions, with their own knowledge and instructions.
Claude Enterprise is listed at $20 a seat plus usage at API rates; ChatGPT Enterprise is quote-only.
Plan this as a context move. List every custom GPT, shared project and connector your team depends on before you switch anything off.
| Step | What you do |
|---|---|
| 1Export what you can from ChatGPT | On a personal plan, go to Settings, then Data controls, then Export data; a ZIP of your chat history arrives by email within up to 7 days, and the link expires after 24 hours. Business and Enterprise members have no self-service export: ask the workspace owner. |
| 2Inventory custom GPTs and projects | For each custom GPT, copy its instructions and download its knowledge files. Note which connectors (Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, Microsoft 365) each team relies on. |
| 3Set up Claude Team | Buy at least 2 seats (up to 150), choosing Standard ($20 a month annual) or Premium ($100) per person, and turn on single sign-on. |
| 4Rebuild custom GPTs as Claude projects | Create a project per GPT, paste its instructions as project instructions, upload the knowledge files, and share it with the team. |
| 5Import memory | Each user can run Claude’s experimental memory import: paste Anthropic’s prompt into ChatGPT, then paste the answer into Claude under Settings, then Memory. |
| 6Enable connectors and run both for a week | Owners enable the connectors the team needs and web search. Keep ChatGPT seats until people have moved their daily work. |
What this path doesn’t do for you:
Chat history does not transfer: Claude documents no import of ChatGPT conversations, so keep the export as an archive. Custom GPT actions and workspace agents must be rebuilt by hand. Claude does not generate images, and Claude Team stops at 150 seats. Memory import is experimental and not listed for Enterprise.

No. Anthropic documents a memory import from other assistants, but no import of chat history. Keep your ChatGPT export as an archive.
Create a Claude project, paste the GPT’s instructions into the project instructions, upload its knowledge files and share the project with your team. Actions that call external APIs have to be rebuilt.
No. Both are $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat a month on annual billing, with a two-seat minimum.
No. OpenAI says self-service export is not available in Business or Enterprise workspaces; the workspace owner handles it.
No official path moves chat history between these assistants for business accounts. Keep your export as an archive, and move the knowledge that matters (instructions, reference files, prompts) into the new tool’s projects or custom assistants.
