KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT · MIGRATION GUIDE

Switching from Notion to Confluence

Moving from Notion to Confluence usually happens as a company scales into the Atlassian ecosystem, and Atlassian’s own “Notion Importer” app gives this direction a real native migration path.

Quick verdict: A logical move for teams already standardizing on Jira for engineering work who want documentation living next to it, but expect a real adjustment period since Confluence’s page/space model is more structured and less flexible than Notion’s blocks.

Why teams switch from Notion to Confluence

Tighter integration with Jira

Engineering-heavy organizations already running Jira get native linking between tickets and documentation pages that a separate Notion workspace can’t match.

Enterprise-grade permissions and spaces

Confluence’s space-and-permission model is built for larger, more hierarchical organizations that need finer-grained access control than Notion’s sharing settings.

A real native importer now exists

Atlassian’s official “Notion Importer” app bulk-imports Notion content directly into Confluence, avoiding a fully manual page-by-page rebuild.

How to migrate your data

Atlassian’s Notion Importer app handles the bulk content transfer, but plan for manual cleanup of anything that doesn’t map directly.

StepWhat happens
1Install the Notion Importer appAdd Atlassian’s official Notion Importer app to your Confluence Cloud instance and connect it to your Notion workspace.
2Choose import scopeSelect which Notion pages or the entire workspace to bring over, since large workspaces may be easier to migrate in smaller batches.
3Run the import and review the reportLet the importer convert Notion pages and blocks into Confluence pages, then review its conversion report for anything flagged as unsupported.
4Rebuild unsupported blocks and databasesManually recreate Notion databases, synced blocks, or custom widgets as Confluence macros or tables where the importer couldn’t convert them directly.
5Reapply space and page permissionsSet up Confluence space permissions and page restrictions to match (or improve on) your old Notion sharing settings, since these don’t carry over automatically.
6Spot-check complex pagesManually review pages with heavy formatting, embeds, or nested page trees to confirm they rendered correctly before decommissioning the Notion workspace.
What Confluence’s importer doesn’t handle: Notion databases with complex properties, synced blocks, and custom widgets often don’t convert cleanly to Confluence’s macro-based model and need manual rebuilding; permissions also reset and must be reapplied.

Pricing during the transition

Here’s how Notion and Confluence plans stack up as of September 2026, from free tier to the mid-market plan most switching teams land on. Atlassian prices Confluence per user by team size, and its pricing page shows the 300-user price by default, so check the price for your user count before you budget.

PlanNotionConfluence
Free planFree: $0 — unlimited pages for individuals, limited blocks for small teamsFree: $0 — up to 10 users
Entry paid tierPlus: $10/member/month billed yearlyStandard: $6.70/user/month billed monthly for a 10-user team ($5.42 at Atlassian’s 300-user default)
Mid tierBusiness: $20/member/month billed yearly, adds SAML SSO and advanced permissionsPremium: $10.44/user/month billed monthly at Atlassian’s 300-user default, adds analytics and unlimited storage

Confluence’s per-user pricing looks cheaper at the entry tier, but factor in Jira licensing if your organization is buying them as a bundle.

Feature-parity checklist

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Notion Importer handle our entire workspace at once?

It can, but Atlassian recommends importing in batches for very large workspaces to make it easier to review conversion issues along the way.

What happens to Notion databases during import?

Simple databases generally convert to Confluence tables, but databases with complex relations, rollups, or custom views typically need manual rework after import.

Will our page permissions carry over?

No, Confluence’s space-and-page permission model is different enough from Notion’s sharing settings that you should plan to rebuild access control from scratch.

Do embedded files and images transfer correctly?

Most standard embeds and images convert fine, but it’s worth spot-checking pages with third-party embeds (like external app widgets) since those don’t always survive conversion.

Is this a good move if we don’t use Jira?

It’s a much weaker case: Confluence’s main advantage over Notion is Jira integration, so without Jira in your stack, you may be trading Notion’s flexibility for little practical benefit.
