EMAIL MARKETING · MIGRATION GUIDE

Switching from Mailchimp to Constant Contact

Constant Contact has a built-in Mailchimp integration that pulls in your contacts, tags and media assets. The one thing it will not move is unsubscribed contacts — and those matter most.

Quick verdict: Connect Mailchimp from the Integrations tab in Constant Contact to import contacts, tags and media assets. The integration does not transfer unsubscribed contacts, so export them from Mailchimp and import them manually, or you risk emailing people who opted out. Templates, automations and reports do not come across — rebuild the first two and keep Mailchimp exports for your history.

Most buyers only budget for the new subscription. This estimates the hidden labor, data-cleanup, and retraining cost of actually making the switch.

Why teams move from Mailchimp to Constant Contact

You pay for active contacts only

Constant Contact bills on active contacts and treats unsubscribes as inactive; Mailchimp counts unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts too.

    Premium for less

Constant Contact Premium is $80/mo at 500 contacts with unlimited users, 24x sends and 500 SMS a month; Mailchimp Premium starts at $350 with 10,000 contacts.

    Annual prepay discount

Constant Contact takes up to 15% off when you prepay for 12 months.

    How the migration actually works

This direction has a first-party integration built by the destination, so the contact move is quick. Plan the suppression list and the rebuild of templates and automations separately.

    StepWhat you do
1Size your Constant Contact planCount your active contacts and check the tier (0–500, 501–1,000, 1,001–2,500 …) and users you need: Lite has 1, Standard 3, Premium unlimited.
2Run the Mailchimp integrationIn Constant Contact, open the Integrations tab and connect Mailchimp. It imports your contacts, tags and media assets from your emails and other content.
3Export unsubscribed contacts from MailchimpThe integration does not transfer unsubscribes. In Mailchimp, export your unsubscribed contacts to CSV (only Owners and Admins can export).
4Import unsubscribes into Constant ContactImport that file so those addresses stay suppressed and are never emailed by mistake.
5Rebuild templates and automationsRe-create your key email templates in Constant Contact’s editor and rebuild welcome series and other automations.
6Keep your Mailchimp reportsContact exports do not include email report data, so save the campaign reports you need before you close the account.

What this path doesn’t do for you:

Automations, templates and campaign reports are not part of the transfer. The integration skips unsubscribed contacts, so a manual export and import is essential for compliance. Constant Contact’s tier is set by the highest number of active contacts you reach and deleting contacts does not lower it — clean the list before you import, not after.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does Constant Contact import directly from Mailchimp?

Yes. Its Mailchimp integration, on the Integrations tab, pulls in contacts, tags and media assets from your emails or other content.

    Do unsubscribed contacts transfer?

No. The integration does not transfer unsubscribed contacts; export them from Mailchimp and import them into Constant Contact manually so they stay suppressed.

Will my automations and templates move?

Neither vendor documents automations or templates as part of the transfer, so plan to rebuild them.

Can I keep my Mailchimp campaign reports?

Mailchimp contact exports do not include email report data, so save or download the reports you need before closing your account.

    Will Constant Contact cost less?

At 500 contacts, yes ($12 vs $13 a month on the entry plans). From 501 contacts Mailchimp is usually cheaper on monthly prices, but Constant Contact bills only active contacts and offers up to 15% off for prepaying a year.
