PROJECT MANAGEMENT · MIGRATION GUIDE

Switching from Trello to Asana

Asana’s CSV importer handles Trello exports, but Trello only exports boards to CSV on Premium. Here is the route for each Trello plan, and what a CSV leaves behind.

Quick verdict: If your Trello Workspace is on Premium, export each board to CSV and load it with Asana’s CSV importer. If it is not, Asana points to a browser-extension export or to third-party migration apps in its app directory. Trello’s CSV export contains cards only — no comments, checklists or attachments — so decide up front whether you need a richer migration tool.

Switching Cost & Friction Estimator

Most buyers only budget for the new subscription. This estimates the hidden labor, data-cleanup, and retraining cost of actually making the switch.

Estimate assumes: 1 hour of data-mapping/cleaning labor per 2,000 records, a blended $75/hr ops rate, tiered migration & cleaning tooling fees, and 4 hours of retraining per seat at a $45/hr fully-loaded rate.

Why teams move from Trello to Asana

    Timelines and dependencies

Asana includes timeline and Gantt views, dependencies and dashboards from Starter — the cross-project layer boards alone do not give you.

    Portfolio-level reporting

Asana Advanced adds portfolios, goals and resource management for teams running many projects.

    An importer on every plan

Asana’s CSV importer is available on all plans, including the free Personal plan.

    How the migration actually works

Your Trello plan decides the route. JSON export works on every Trello plan; CSV export needs a Premium Workspace.

    StepWhat you do
    1. Check your Trello planBoards in Premium Workspaces can be exported to CSV. On other plans, JSON export is available but Asana’s importer needs CSV.
    2. Export the boardOn Premium: open the board menu, choose Print and export, then Export as CSV. Without Premium, use a browser-extension export or a third-party migration app.
    3. Decide what else you needTrello’s CSV contains cards only. If comments, checklists or attachments matter, use a third-party migration tool listed in Asana’s app directory.
    4. Import into AsanaUpload the CSV with Asana’s CSV importer. Data is mapped by column name.
    5. Map labels and listsMap Trello lists to Asana sections and labels to custom fields.
    6. Rebuild Power-Up workflowsReplace Butler automations and Power-Ups with Asana rules and integrations.

What this path doesn’t do for you:

Trello’s CSV export excludes comments, checklists and attachments, and archived cards are left out by default. Without a Premium Workspace there is no CSV export at all, so you will need a browser extension or a third-party tool. Automations and Power-Ups have to be rebuilt in Asana.
