Bottom line up front: Does a Microsoft 365 team need to pay for Copilot?

Not at first: Copilot Chat comes with eligible Microsoft 365 business plans, and even without a paid licence it can answer questions across a user's email, calendar, meetings and chats in Outlook.

Copilot Business is a $21/user/mo add-on (annual) that needs a Microsoft 365 Business plan underneath, and Microsoft also sells Business Standard with Copilot at $23.50 and Business Premium with Copilot at $32, both on annual terms. Before any rollout, fix your sharing. An assistant that searches across someone's data will happily surface anything that person can already open, so the salary spreadsheet shared with the whole company years ago becomes one question away. Review who can reach your sensitive folders and sites first, then buy paid seats only for whoever outgrows Copilot Chat, pricing the bundle against the plan plus add-on, since AI pricing changes often.
