PASSWORD MANAGERS · MIGRATION GUIDE

Switching from Bitwarden to 1Password

1Password imports Bitwarden’s password-protected encrypted JSON export. Passkeys and items in shared collections do not come across, so plan for those.

Quick verdict: Export each member’s vault from Bitwarden as a password-protected encrypted JSON, import it on 1Password.com or in the apps, and recreate shared collections as 1Password vaults by hand (items in shared collections are not imported). Bitwarden accounts using Argon2id must switch to PBKDF2 before exporting. Choose Business ($8.99 a user) for SSO, SCIM and policies.

    How the migration actually works

Shared collections need a separate plan: 1Password does not import items in shared collections.

    StepWhat you do
1Check the key derivation setting1Password says Bitwarden accounts using Argon2id must switch to PBKDF2 before exporting.
2Export from BitwardenExport from the web app, extension, desktop app or CLI as encrypted JSON (recommended), plain JSON or CSV. Only JSON includes cards, identities, passkeys and SSH keys; organization data is exported separately by an admin.
3Set up 1PasswordChoose Teams Starter Pack or Business, create vaults for each team, and configure SSO and SCIM on Business.
4Import personal vaultsImport each encrypted JSON on 1Password.com or in the apps.
5Rebuild shared vaults and passkeysMove shared-collection items and passkeys into 1Password by hand.
6Delete the export fileUnencrypted exports contain every password in plain text. Delete the file securely once the import is verified.

What this path doesn’t do for you:

Items in shared collections and passkeys are not imported. Bitwarden Secrets Manager secrets need separate handling.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can 1Password import from Bitwarden?

Yes, from a password-protected encrypted JSON export. Items in shared collections and passkeys are not imported.

Why do I need to change Argon2id?

1Password’s import guide says Bitwarden accounts using Argon2id must switch to PBKDF2 before exporting.

    Will it cost more?

Per user, yes: $8.99 on 1Password Business against $4 to $6 on Bitwarden (annual billing).

Do I need to change my passwords after switching?

Moving vaults does not require it, but it is a good moment to rotate shared and high-risk credentials and to run the new tool’s breach and weak-password report.
