Bottom line up front: What gets left behind when you move from OneDrive to Google Drive?

More than most expect: Google's data import copies files, folders and sharing permissions, but previous versions, Personal Vault files, Favorites and files created or last modified by external users stay behind.

Check storage before anything else, because Workspace Business Starter pools 30 GB per person against 1 TB per user on Microsoft 365 Business Basic, and Business Standard ($14) pools 2 TB per person. The detail I'd plan around is where files land: in each person's My Drive, not shared drives. Team files sitting in individual drives belong to individuals, so the day someone leaves, the company's work goes into offboarding limbo. Move shared work into shared drives right after the import and give each one an owner. Run a delta import to catch late changes, then cancel Microsoft at the end of its term.

    How the migration actually works

    For a business, check storage first: Workspace Business Starter pools 30 GB per person, against 1 TB per user on Microsoft 365 Business Basic; Business Standard ($14) pools 2 TB per person.

    Is there a tool to move OneDrive to Google Drive?

    For business accounts, yes: the data import tool in the Google Admin console. It needs a Google super administrator and a Microsoft Global Administrator, and handles up to 500 users per default import.

    What happens to sharing?

    Writer becomes Editor; Reader, Reviewer and Can’t download become Viewer. “Anyone” links become anyone-with-the-link sharing, and when an item has several links the most restrictive wins.

    Will it cost more?

    Not at the entry tier: 100 GB is $1.99 a month on both. For a business, both start at $7 a user, but Google pools 30 GB per person against Microsoft’s 1 TB.

    Do version histories move?

    Plan for the latest version only. Google’s OneDrive import copies only the latest version of each file; download-and-upload moves only current files too.
