Bottom line Editorial assessment

Is Notion or ClickUp better for a small team?

Choose ClickUp, at $7 a user a month billed yearly, if you need a real task tracker with time tracking, sprints and Gantt built in; it also imports Notion natively. Choose Notion, at $10 a member a month billed yearly, if your team writes more than it tracks and wants wikis, docs and databases in one workspace with AI bundled into its $20 Business plan.

Quick verdict: ClickUp is $3 a seat cheaper at the entry tier ($7 against $10 a month, both billed yearly) and its Free Forever plan has no member limit, where Notion’s free plan is built for individuals. ClickUp is the stronger project tracker out of the box: statuses, sprints, Gantt, native time tracking and dashboards are built in. Notion is the stronger writing and knowledge tool, with databases flexible enough to run lightweight projects. ClickUp has a native Notion importer on every plan; Notion has no ClickUp importer.

Editorial assessment

How they actually differ

Both tools let a team write, plan and track work in one place, but they start from opposite ends: Notion from the document, ClickUp from the task.

Documents first or tasks first

Notion’s unit is the page; a project board is a database view inside a page, and most of its strength is in writing, wikis and linked databases. ClickUp’s unit is the task, with docs, whiteboards and chat attached to the task hierarchy. Teams that mostly write choose Notion; teams that mostly assign and track choose ClickUp.

What the entry tiers include

ClickUp Unlimited ($7) adds unlimited storage, Gantt charts, custom fields, native time tracking and guests with permission control. Notion Plus ($10) adds custom forms and sites, unlimited file uploads and unlimited charts; Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and SAML SSO sit on Business ($20).

AI pricing

Notion includes a trial of Notion AI on Free and Plus and bundles its AI features into Business. ClickUp sells AI as an add-on, shown at $9 on its pricing page, with AI Super Credits priced separately.

Moving between them

ClickUp has a native Notion importer on all plans (Workspace settings, Import / Export, Notion): databases arrive as a single Folder, Notion fields become Text custom fields and pages become ClickUp Docs; inline database comments, attachments and button fields do not import. Notion has no ClickUp importer, so the reverse trip is a CSV export from ClickUp and Notion’s CSV import, which creates a database.

Notion

Pros

  • Best-in-class docs, wikis and linked databases
  • Flexible enough to run light project tracking
  • AI features bundled into Business rather than sold separately
  • Very large template and integration ecosystem

Cons

  • $3 a seat more than ClickUp at the entry tier
  • No native time tracking, sprints or Gantt
  • Free plan is aimed at individuals
  • No importer for ClickUp data

ClickUp

Pros

  • Lower entry price ($7 vs $10, yearly)
  • Free Forever plan with unlimited members
  • Native time tracking, Gantt, sprints and dashboards
  • Native Notion importer on every plan

Cons

  • AI is a paid add-on
  • Docs and wiki are weaker than Notion’s
  • Free plan capped at 60MB of storage
  • More configuration to learn before it feels simple
