PROJECT MANAGEMENT · MIGRATION GUIDE

Switching from Linear to Jira

Jira Cloud lists Linear among its native importers, with the Jira CSV importer as a fallback. The catch is Jira’s rule that imports must fit your existing space configuration.

Quick verdict: Use Jira Cloud’s built-in Linear importer, or export from Linear and use Jira’s CSV importer. Before either, set up the Jira space: CSV imports cannot create new statuses, work types, custom fields or field options, so everything you bring in has to match the configuration that already exists.

Switching Cost & Friction Estimator

Most buyers only budget for the new subscription. This estimates the hidden labor, data-cleanup, and retraining cost of actually making the switch.

Estimate assumes: 1 hour of data-mapping/cleaning labor per 2,000 records, a blended $75/hr ops rate, tiered migration & cleaning tooling fees, and 4 hours of retraining per seat at a $45/hr fully-loaded rate.

Why teams move from Linear to Jira

    Configurability

Jira’s custom workflows, issue types and permissions suit teams whose processes outgrew an opinionated model.

    The Atlassian stack

Teams standardising on Confluence and Jira Service Management often want engineering in the same ecosystem.

    Lower per-user cost

Jira Standard is $9.05/user/mo on monthly billing for 10–50 users, against $12/user/mo for Linear Basic.

    How the migration actually works

Configure first, then import. Jira validates imported data against the space’s existing setup.

    StepWhat you do
    1. Configure the Jira spaceCreate the statuses, work types and custom fields you need before importing — a CSV import cannot add them.
    2. Choose the routeUse Jira Cloud’s native Linear importer, or export issues from Linear and use the CSV importer.
    3. Map fieldsMap Linear statuses, labels and priorities to the Jira values you created.
    4. Validate a sampleFor CSV imports, Jira checks the first 30 rows against your field mapping and shows errors to fix before import.
    5. Import in batchesSplit large CSV files into smaller batches, as Atlassian recommends, to avoid performance problems.
    6. Optional: keep Linear in sync during the switchLinear’s Jira sync can mirror new issues in both directions while teams move.

What this path doesn’t do for you:

Jira will not create configuration during a CSV import — statuses, work types, custom fields and field options must already exist. Errors beyond the first 30 validated rows can still fail an import. Linear cycles do not map to Jira sprints automatically.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can Jira import from Linear?

Yes. Jira Cloud lists Linear among its native importers, alongside a general CSV importer.

Can a CSV import create new Jira statuses or fields?

No. Statuses, work types, custom fields and field options must already exist in the space.

Why did my CSV import fail after validation?

Jira validates only the first 30 rows before import; errors later in the file can still cause failure. Splitting large files into batches helps.

Can we keep using Linear during the move?

Yes, Linear’s Jira sync can mirror new issues in both directions.
