Switching from Squarespace to Framer

Squarespace exports a WordPress XML file for some content and Framer imports CSV into its CMS, so blog content can move; the design is rebuilt in Framer.

Bottom line up front: What survives a move from Squarespace to Framer, and what has to be rebuilt?

Your blog survives and your store doesn't: Squarespace exports one blog and layout pages as WordPress XML, but not store pages, style settings or custom CSS.

Framer's WordPress guide converts that XML to CSV for its CMS, and its browser extension can copy sections from your live pages, so the design rebuild beats a blank canvas. The price drops too, $10 a month on Framer Basic against $19 on Squarespace Basic, as long as you don't add many editors at $20 each. Protect the search traffic before any of that. I've led enough SEO work to know that a page whose URL changes without a redirect loses the rankings it earned, so pull a full list of your current URLs and map each one to a 301 redirect in Framer's Site Settings. Test the old links before you move the domain, and if you sell, pick a home for the store first.

    How the migration actually works

Store pages, style settings and custom CSS do not export from Squarespace, and Framer charges $20 a month per additional editor.

    StepWhat you do
1Export from SquarespaceExport your site to a WordPress .xml file: layout pages, one blog with its posts, and text, image and gallery content.
2Convert posts to CSVFramer’s WordPress guide converts that XML (WXR) file to CSV for its CMS.
3Import into Framer CMSCreate a CMS collection, import the CSV and review the field mapping.
4Rebuild pagesRecreate pages on the Framer canvas; the Framer browser extension can copy sections from your live Squarespace pages.
5Set redirectsAdd 301 redirects from old URLs in Framer’s Site Settings → Redirects.
6Buy a Site plan and move the domainBasic or Pro lets you connect a custom domain and remove Framer branding.
7Cancel SquarespaceCancel once the Framer site is live and redirects work.

What this path doesn’t do for you:

Squarespace does not export store pages, other page types, style settings or custom CSS, so commerce has to be rebuilt or kept elsewhere. Only one blog exports.
