Bottom line Editorial assessment

Is Bitwarden better than LastPass for teams?

Bitwarden is cheaper ($4 against $4.25 a user on the team plans, annual billing), open source with published audits, and includes SCIM on Teams. LastPass offers more admin policies and a data-region choice on Business, and its own notices describe two incidents in 2022.

Quick verdict: Bitwarden is cheaper at each tier: Teams is $4 and Enterprise $6 a user a month on annual billing, against LastPass Teams at $4.25 (capped at 50 users), Business $7 and Business Max $11. Bitwarden is open source, publishes annual third-party audits, includes SCIM and directory sync on Teams, and offers self-hosting on Enterprise. LastPass puts federated login, SCIM, 100+ policies and free family accounts on Business, and lets Business customers request a non-US data region. LastPass’s own notices describe two incidents in 2022: an attacker took source code and internal secrets, then accessed cloud backups that included backups of customer vault data. LastPass says sensitive vault fields were encrypted, while other data, such as website URLs, was not.

Editorial assessment

How they actually differ

These are the two lowest-priced business password managers we track, a few cents apart per user at the team tier. They differ on transparency, where admin controls sit, and track record.

Admin controls by plan

Bitwarden gives Teams SCIM, directory sync, event logs and the public API, and keeps SSO, policies, custom roles and account recovery for Enterprise ($6). LastPass Teams has 25 policies and basic reporting; Business ($7) adds federated login, SCIM, 100+ policies, SIEM integrations and free family accounts.

Transparency and trust

Bitwarden is open source and publishes its annual third-party audits. LastPass’s own notices describe two incidents in 2022: an attacker took source code and internal secrets, then accessed cloud backups that included backups of customer vault data. LastPass says sensitive vault fields were encrypted, while other data, such as website URLs, was not.

Moving between them

Bitwarden imports directly from a LastPass account in its browser extension or desktop app, or from a LastPass CSV. LastPass imports Bitwarden’s CSV export through its importer.

What this means for your team

  • Audit reports: both publish a SOC 2 report, and Bitwarden and LastPass also hold ISO/IEC 27001. Ask each vendor for the report under NDA before you sign; security reviews usually want the latest one.
  • Single sign-on: Bitwarden includes it on Enterprise; LastPass includes it on Business. If your team signs in through Okta, Microsoft Entra ID or Google, price the plan that includes SSO, not the entry plan.
  • Working offline: Bitwarden and LastPass work offline only in part. Details are in the Offline mode row above.
  • Office-only access: LastPass can restrict sign-ins to approved IP ranges on Business Max. That suits an office network or a company VPN; fully remote teams need a VPN for it to work.
  • Where your data lives: Bitwarden lets you choose US, EU; LastPass lets you choose US, Canada, EU, UK, Australia, Singapore, India on Business. This matters for teams hiring across the EU, UK or Australia.
  • In the office: Bitwarden: Two-step login supports up to 10 hardware security keys and Yubico OTP; no other office hardware documented. LastPass: Hardware MFA options (standalone fingerprint scanners, card readers, hardware keys like YubiKey) on all business plans; Windows/Mac workstation MFA and a Universal Proxy for LDAP/RADIUS VPN apps on Business Max.

Bitwarden: worth knowing

  • OfflineBitwarden apps work offline only in read-only mode: you can view but not add or edit items without a connection. source
  • OfficeThe desktop app can be installed on air-gapped/offline machines from the GitHub release installer and asset bundle, though it will not auto-update. source
  • SecurityEnterprise customers can self-host Bitwarden on their own servers behind a proxy or firewall for data-residency control. source
  • RemoteCloud accounts live in either the US or EU region, chosen at sign-up; an account exists only in the region where it was created. source

LastPass: worth knowing

  • OfflineOffline, LastPass opens a cached read-only vault; you cannot create new entries until you reconnect. source
  • RemoteVault data is stored in the US by default; only Business accounts can request storage in Canada, Europe, UK, Australia, Singapore or India. source
  • OfficeBusiness Max adds MFA for legacy and VPN apps using LDAP or RADIUS through the LastPass Universal Proxy. source
  • SecurityLastPass's own incident notice says 2022 attackers accessed cloud backups including customer vault data; sensitive fields were encrypted but URLs were not. source
