Bottom line Editorial assessment

Which is better for a small team, Hootsuite or Buffer?

Choose Buffer if you mainly schedule posts and want a free plan or Team at $10 a channel a month with unlimited users; choose Hootsuite if you need a message inbox, listening and ads in one tool, from $99 a user a month on annual billing.

Quick verdict: Buffer is far cheaper for small teams: it has a free plan for 3 channels, and Team costs $10 a channel a month on annual billing with unlimited users, so five channels for the whole team is $50 a month. Hootsuite starts at $99 a user a month on annual billing for up to 10 social accounts, but includes much more: a unified inbox for messages, basic social listening, and ads management on every plan. Buffer says it offers no social listening or ad management, and its inbox handles comments rather than direct messages. Approvals are on Buffer Team and on Hootsuite Advanced ($399 a user).

Editorial assessment

How they actually differ

Buffer does one job, scheduling and analysing posts, and prices it per channel. Hootsuite covers publishing, engagement, listening, ads and reporting, and prices per user. Which is cheaper depends on how many people and how many channels you have.

How pricing scales

Buffer bills per connected channel, not per user: $5 a channel a month on Essentials and $10 on Team with annual billing ($6 and $12 monthly) for the first 10 channels, with lower rates above 10. Essentials allows 1 user; Team includes unlimited users.

Hootsuite charges $99, $199 or $399 a user a month on annual billing; Standard covers up to 10 social accounts and Professional and above are unlimited. Hootsuite confirms monthly billing costs more but does not publish the monthly price.

Beyond scheduling

Hootsuite includes a unified inbox, basic listening (7 days of search on Standard, 30 from Professional) and ads publishing on every plan, with DM automations from Professional and message routing on Advanced. Buffer’s own help center says it has no social listening, ad management or sentiment analysis.

Teams and approvals

Buffer Team adds unlimited team members, access levels and approval workflows. On Hootsuite, approvals and message assignment need Advanced, at $399 a user a month on annual billing.

What this means for your team

  • Audit reports: Hootsuite states a SOC 2 report on its own site; we found no SOC 2 statement for Buffer. If your security team requires SOC 2, ask Buffer directly before shortlisting.
  • Single sign-on: Hootsuite includes it on Enterprise. Buffer doesn’t document single sign-on with your own identity provider. If your team signs in through Okta, Microsoft Entra ID or Google, price the plan that includes SSO, not the entry plan.
  • Working offline: Hootsuite and Buffer don’t document an offline mode. Details are in the Offline mode row above.

Hootsuite: worth knowing

  • RemoteStandard, Professional and Advanced customers get support via help center tickets and X/Facebook, Monday to Friday business hours in several regional time zones; languages are English, Spanish and French. source

Buffer: worth knowing

  • SecurityBuffer says it is SOC 2 compliant (on a Buffer-owned blog post), without stating the report type. source
  • RemoteTeam owners and admins can require every team member to turn on two-factor authentication before using Buffer; the 2FA article says this is on the web for Team and Essentials users with Beta features enabled. source
  • RemoteBuffer recommends an authenticator app over SMS codes for people working without cell reception, for example on a plane. source
  • RemoteSupport is by email on every plan, including Free; the pricing page does not list phone or live chat. source
