Sprout Social

Bottom line Editorial assessment

Is Sprout Social worth it over Buffer?

Only if your team manages customer messages, reviews and detailed reporting: Sprout starts at $79 a seat a month on annual billing and adds its inbox from $199. For planning and scheduling posts, Buffer covers the job from free, or $10 a channel a month on Team with unlimited users.

Quick verdict: Buffer costs a fraction of Sprout Social: a free plan for 3 channels, and Team at $10 a channel a month on annual billing with unlimited users and approvals. Sprout starts at $79 a seat a month on annual billing, and its features that Buffer lacks sit higher up: the all-in-one inbox from Standard ($199), approvals and bulk scheduling from Professional ($299), and listening as a paid add-on. If your job is planning, scheduling and reporting on posts, Buffer covers it. If you handle customer messages, reviews and reporting across a team, Sprout is built for that, at many times the price.

Editorial assessment

How they actually differ

Buffer is a publishing and analytics tool. Sprout Social adds an inbox for messages and reviews, listening, deep reporting and customer-care workflows. The price difference reflects that gap.

Pricing model

Buffer bills per connected channel, not per user: $5 a channel a month on Essentials and $10 on Team with annual billing ($6 and $12 monthly) for the first 10 channels, with lower rates above 10. Essentials allows 1 user; Team includes unlimited users.

Sprout charges per seat: $79, $199, $299 or $399 a month on annual billing, or $99 to $499 monthly. Essentials and Standard cap you at 5 profiles; Professional and above are unlimited.

What Sprout adds

Sprout’s inbox (from Standard) pulls messages and reviews into one place, with full history, tagging and approvals higher up. Professional adds competitor and paid reports; Advanced adds sentiment, the API and helpdesk integrations. Buffer’s community inbox handles comments, and Buffer says it has no listening, ads management or sentiment analysis.

Moving between them

Neither imports from the other. Buffer’s CSV bulk upload takes up to 100 posts per channel per upload on paid plans; Sprout’s bulk scheduling takes up to 350 messages per import on Professional and Advanced, without video.

What this means for your team

  • Audit reports: Sprout Social states a SOC 2 report on its own site; we found no SOC 2 statement for Buffer. If your security team requires SOC 2, ask Buffer directly before shortlisting.
  • Single sign-on: Sprout Social includes it. Buffer doesn’t document single sign-on with your own identity provider. If your team signs in through Okta, Microsoft Entra ID or Google, price the plan that includes SSO, not the entry plan.
  • Health data: Sprout Social will sign a HIPAA business associate agreement (Sprout Social: Guardian (add-on) for PHI collection via Secure Forms). We found no BAA offer for Buffer, so keep protected health information out of it.
  • Working offline: Buffer and Sprout Social don’t document an offline mode. Details are in the Offline mode row above.
  • Office-only access: Sprout Social can restrict sign-ins to approved IP ranges on Advanced. That suits an office network or a company VPN; fully remote teams need a VPN for it to work.

Buffer: worth knowing

  • SecurityBuffer says it is SOC 2 compliant (on a Buffer-owned blog post), without stating the report type. source
  • RemoteTeam owners and admins can require every team member to turn on two-factor authentication before using Buffer; the 2FA article says this is on the web for Team and Essentials users with Beta features enabled. source
  • RemoteBuffer recommends an authenticator app over SMS codes for people working without cell reception, for example on a plane. source
  • RemoteSupport is by email on every plan, including Free; the pricing page does not list phone or live chat. source

Sprout Social: worth knowing

  • RemoteLive phone and live chat support run 24/5 on every plan, which covers teams working across time zones on weekdays. source
  • SecurityAdmins can restrict app and API access to specific IP ranges, such as an office or VPN. source
  • RemoteIn a crisis, one button pauses all scheduled and queued messages, and it works from both the web and mobile apps. source
  • SecurityAll data is hosted in the US (AWS us-east-1 primary, us-west-2 secondary, GCP us-central1 for disaster recovery); no other region is offered. source
