Switching from Polar to Stripe

Polar’s team moves your customers and saved cards to Stripe; you recreate products, prices and active subscriptions, and take over sales tax yourself.

Bottom line up front: What does it take to move a subscription business from Polar to Stripe?

Less data work than you'd fear and more tax work than you'd guess: Polar's team transfers customers and saved cards, and the seller's tax job becomes yours.

Products, prices, discounts and active subscriptions don't transfer, so each subscription gets recreated in Stripe on its current billing date, and Stripe Billing (0.7%) and Tax (0.5%) may start as Polar's fees stop. Sort out tax registration before the first Stripe charge, not after, because once you're the seller every sale is your liability. Then keep one spreadsheet of every active subscription with its price, next bill date and status, and tick each off as its Stripe copy goes live and the Polar one is cancelled, since that's how you catch a double charge or a customer who silently stops paying. Email customers before the switch too. The business charging their card changes from Polar to you, and a charge people don't recognize is how you end up paying $15 per dispute.

Switching Cost & Friction Estimator

Most buyers only budget for the new subscription. This estimates the hidden labor, data-cleanup, and retraining cost of actually making the switch.

Why teams move from Polar to Stripe

    Lower rate

2.9% + 30¢ per domestic card sale, no monthly fee.

    Full control

You own checkout, billing logic and customer records directly.

    Cards come with you

Polar’s team transfers saved payment methods to your Stripe account, so customers do not re-enter cards.

    How the migration actually works

Polar’s exit is coordinated by its team, not a self-serve export. Line up tax registration before you switch, because Stripe will not act as seller unless you use its Managed Payments option.

    StepWhat you do
1Plan your sales taxDecide where you must register for sales tax or VAT, or price Stripe Tax (0.5% per transaction) or Stripe Managed Payments (3.5% on top of payment fees).
2Set up StripeCreate your Stripe account, verify your business profile and build checkout and Billing for new customers first.
3Ask Polar to transfer customers and cardsTell Polar your destination Stripe account. Its team transfers customers (name, email, billing details) and saved payment methods; no card data passes through you.
4Recreate products and pricesProducts, prices, discounts and benefits do not transfer. Rebuild them in Stripe.
5Recreate subscriptions on their current cycleCreate each active subscription in Stripe aligned to its existing billing date, using the transferred saved card.
6Cancel the Polar subscriptionsCancel each Polar subscription as its Stripe copy goes live so no customer is charged twice. Past transactions stay viewable in Polar.

What this path doesn’t do for you:

Active subscriptions, products, prices, discounts and benefits do not move; you recreate them. Tax liability moves to you. Polar’s payout and plan fees stop, but Stripe Billing (0.7%) and Tax (0.5%) may start.

    Before you cut over

    • Set up single sign-on in Stripe before you invite the team, so accounts are created through your identity provider rather than by hand.
    • Stripe adds offline access (partial): install the mobile app for staff who work on the move.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I export my customers from Polar?

Yes, through Polar’s team: it transfers customers and saved payment methods to your new processor. It is not a self-serve export.

    Do my subscriptions move automatically?

No. Polar’s guide says active subscriptions must be recreated on the new provider, aligned to existing billing cycles, then cancelled in Polar.

Will Stripe handle my sales tax?

Stripe Tax (0.5% per transaction) calculates and collects where you are registered, but you file and remit. For a merchant of record, Stripe lists Managed Payments at 3.5% on top of payment fees.

    Will I save money?

On fees, yes: 2.9% + 30¢ against Polar’s 3.4% + 30¢ on its Scale plan, plus no plan or payout fees. Add your tax costs before deciding.
